Hotel Gundam Style: inside the exclusive anime hotel suite

We spent a night in the enormous Gundam suite. If you’re after an anime themed hotel room and you’re into the Gundam series, look no further than Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba/Grand Pacific Le Daiba X Gundam Front Tokyo Project Room-G. The exclusive Gundam themed hotel rooms are the ultimate way to spend a night in total Gundam style – read on to find out everything you could possibly want to know about it.

UPDATE:

  • The life-size Gundam statue is being taken down after 5 March 2017.
  • Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba Hotel (formerly Grand Pacific le Daiba) is closing its Gundam themed hotel rooms on 31 March 2017.
  • Gundam Front Tokyo is closing on 5 April 2017.

If you’re keen to experience any of the above, get in quickly before it’s too late.

The island of Odaiba in Tokyo Bay has more Gundam themed activities than any other place in the world, and staying in a Gundam suite in a five star hotel is the icing on the cake. Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba (formerly Grand Pacific Le Daiba) is a five star hotel in Odaiba, just a few minutes’ walk from Diver City, the large shopping centre where Gundam Front Tokyo is located. The Gundam themed rooms are a collaboration between Grand Pacific Le Daiba (now the Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba hotel) and Gundam Front Tokyo.

The most sought-after room is the Gundam suite, also known as Room-G Special Type (Gundam Deluxe Twin Suite). To see inside the suite, check out my video tour below:

The enormous suite is the size of two large hotel rooms (rooms 633 and 634). In fact, the suite can be entered via one of two doors and is divided into two separate (but related) themes. The lounge area is EFSF (Earth Federation Space Force) themed, and the bedroom and its ensuite is Zeon themed. There is a door separating the two areas. Since there are two doors through which the suite can be entered, each guest is given two room keys – one for each part of the suite.

Room G 633 – the Earth Federation side:

The door is painted blue and yellow and features a large EFSF logo.

A life-size cardboard cut-out of Matilda Ajan greets you, and there’s even an EFSF logo in the carpet.

To the right is the mini-bar and tea/coffee making facilities, complete with an EFSF coaster and a WB 102 coaster.

When you open the closet, inside are the children from White Base, Kikka Kitamoto, Letz Cofan and Katz Hawin.

The guest toilet is in the Earth Federation side of the suite, and includes a set of blue and yellow Earth Federation amenities to use (or take home).

Earth Federation amenities. It’s just the packaging that is themed. Underneath, they’re just plain, regular shower caps, etc.

One of the main features of the lounge room – and something which is only available in the suite – is the Gundam cockpit.

Guests can sit in the cockpit, and move the eye piece and fire it up to test out the lights and sound effects.

Here’s a video that I made of the cockpit in action:

Like the other side of the suite, the entrance features the relevant logo in the carpet. On this side, of course, it’s the Zeon logo.

A large artwork featuring the Zeon mobile suits hangs above the bath in the large, five-star bathroom.

The shower features quotes from dialogue between Amuro and Char.

Amenities in this side of the suite are Zeon themed. Like the Earth Federation amenities, they’re just ordinary, plain amenities in themed packaging.

The Gundam suite and rooms come with single beds. Read into this what you will.

The beds each come with a cushion featuring the Zeon logo, along with a runner with the both the Earth Federation and Zeon logos, and the Grand Pacific Le Daiba X Gundam Front Tokyo Project Room-G logo (in neutral colours, perhaps because it represents both the Zeon and Earth Federation).

A small coffee table between two chairs features the Zeon logo. Note that the chairs are not themed, and would look a lot better in the non-themed hotel rooms. There are a several signs that a few expenses were spared in the making of the Gundam rooms. The curtains are also just the ordinary curtains from the rest of the hotel, and the bedroom features a chandelier (whereas a light with the Zeon logo would have been a nice touch).

Outside the bedroom, a Zaku mobile suit peers through the window.

The wall behind the desk and TV in the bedroom features a huge mural of Char’s various mobile suits. (Again, I would like to have seen the desk and chair replaced with something that fits more with the anime theme.)

Guests staying at the Gundam suite are given plenty of amenities to take home:

Gundam Hotel FAQs:

How much does it cost to stay in the Gundam hotel rooms?

Grand Pacific Le Daiba (now Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba) is a five-star hotel, so you can expect to pay five-star prices, plus a bit extra because these are exclusive themed rooms. Additionally, the rates are per person, not just per room.

These are the prices according to the website: The least expensive rooms (which basically just have some Gundam artworks on the walls and Gundam bed-runners) cost 15,900 Yen (that’s US$131.50 or AU$183 at the time of writing) per night per person for two people. In other words, upwards of 31,800 Yen (US$263 or AU$365) for the very cheapest, most basic room.

The suite starts at 34,800 Yen per night per person for two people (US$288 or AU$400) or 28,300 Yen per person per night for three people. That’s upwards of 69,600 (US$575 or AU$800) per night for two or more people.

Lower rates can be found on the JAPANiCAN website, where the prices vary from night to night, and thankfully begin a little lower than the above. For the Gundam suite, the lower end of the spectrum will set you back 48,000 Yen per night for two people (around US$397 or AU$552 at the time of writing), depending on the date that you select. Note that you can’t pay in advance, so what you end up paying will depend on the currency conversion at the time of your stay.

The hotel itself also charges an accommodation tax (about 400 Yen) on top of the room rate.

How do you book a Gundam themed hotel room?

Japanese locals can book directly through the Grand Pacific Le Daiba website Grand Nikko Tokyo Daiba website.

Foreigners must make their reservations via the JAPANiCAN website. This is a good thing, as it’s in English and the prices are much lower (see above)! Booking a room this way also means that tickets to Gundam Front Tokyo (one per guest) are included, which are valid until the day of check-out (inclusive).

If you’re looking to book the Gundam suite featured in this post, it’s called Room-G Special Type (Gundam Deluxe Twin Suite).

How many Gundam rooms are available?

There is just one Gundam suite, and more than one Gundam room. One of the rooms is next door to the suite (the Gundam rooms are easy to spot by the ‘Room G’ plaques on the door – the doors of the suite are painted, as per the photos in the post, whereas the rooms simply have the plaques), but we couldn’t see the other Gundam rooms.

Are the rooms smoking or non-smoking?

All of the Gundam rooms are on the 6th floor, which is a smoking floor. The Gundam rooms themselves are all non-smoking.

Is Gundam themed food available in the hotel?

Early on when the themed rooms first opened, there was a Gundam room-service menu. Sadly this has been long since discontinued. If you want Gundam themed snacks, the Gundam cafe out the front of Diver City has takeaway Gundam treats.

Can the Gundam statue be seen from the hotel rooms?

None of the Gundam hotel rooms have views of the life-size Gundam statue. For starters, the Gundam rooms face the water in the opposite direction to the statue. None of the rooms at Grand Pacific Le Daiba have views of the statue, as it’s on the other side of the Diver City shopping centre. Instead, appropriately themed decals adorn the windows.

Would I recommend staying in the exclusive Gundam suite?

The Gundam suite (or any of the Gundam themed rooms) is very much for the hardcore Gundam fan. If you’re willing to fork out the cash to pay for a night in the Gundam suite in order to enjoy the ultimate Gundam experience, then it’s something to consider. Given the cost, we probably wouldn’t do it again, but we really enjoyed staying in Odaiba as it gave us plenty of time to do everything we wanted to do over two days.

I’m going to wrap up this post with a few more photos (and some gratuitous use of fish-eye, because it’s hard to capture the whole place using a normal lense).
